Update 3: 27 killed in US school shooting
Twenty-seven people have died, including 18 children, after a shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, officials said.
Another official said the gunman is among the dead.
The killings happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 60 miles north-east of New York City.
Photos from the scene showed young students - some crying, others looking visibly frightened - - being escorted by adults through a car park in a line, with hands on each other's shoulders.
Barack Obama has been briefed about the shooting by his counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan, the President's Press Secretary Jay Carney said.
Mr Carney, who would not confirm any details, said the president would continue to receive regular updates throughout the day.

I totally agree with Mr.Eric Camilleri, you can never ban Evil...and for Evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.....So if you stop for a second and think about it...these things happen even if there's no gun at your disposal...So I'd rather have a world that is full of mad men and good men armed to protect themselves and their families then a world that is just full of evil.

I can never understand how someone can kill innocent people and far worse if they are children. To target a school where one knows there are the defenceless is pure evil. But then again if the evil and sick mind wants to harm innoccents who else to successfully target if not the defenceless.

This is a tragedy......but what does one expect? Someone once said ' if you consider yourself meat, then meat you are'. Without guidance from the Almighty that is what Man is...........just meat.

Don't be ridiculous. Several wars and massacres were carried out in the name of God.

Let's pray for the victims and their families. And all countries including Malta should ban illegal and legal firearms. We're having too many massacres of innocent people and children. When one has a firearm in his possession you never know when and how he'll use it.

What absurd reasoning. Please tell us how do you ban the illegal ??? On the same day in China a madman knifed 21 little children in a school, a country where firearms are strictly illegal. You will never ban the evil, the madman or the criminal.

Strict gun laws in all countries and the Governments should not allow persons with mental illness to own any guns whatsoever.

A 20 year old madman, who first killed a family member, then drove to the school, killed his mother, who was a teacher there, then continued with the massacre and finally killed himself. What a tragedy. Prayers to the victims and their families.

The success of any country is not measured by the GDP, the number of cars on the road or how many times a year one goes on holiday, but a measure of how happy we are, with peace of mind that our families are safe. This does not augur well for a modern city life! Back to basics I guess, I miss the old days when front door keys were left in the lock. But we were called undeveloped in those days!!

I just can't understand what justification there could possibly be for killing 18 little kids between the ages of 5 and 10. You can maybe see hatred for the headmaster or the teachers for some reason, but little innocent kids!

Our world is in turmoil and this is the result of it, we need to change our governments and start fresh because the people are in dire straits because of a greedy policy by the rich to get richer and the middle class to get in poverty ....

There is no evidence that a greed culture in any way contributed towards these tragic events ; but easy access to firearms may well have done.

Not changing governments but changing our direction, governments and peoples, and going back to God which the world thinks can do away without Him, He is not needed. Only then the world will find peace and bring an end to criminality and turmoil.

The children were locked inside classrooms until the police arrived and shot the gunman. When this photo was taken that area would have been secured and they would be moving the kids to safety whilst clearing the rest of the school.
