A man charged with taking part in a hold-up 11 years ago was yesterday acquitted after no evidence was presented that linked him to the crime.

Sebastian Farrugia, 35, from Qormi, was arrested after witnesses to the hold-up took note of the number plate of the getaway car, which matched that of Mr Farrugia’s car except for one letter.

The hold-up took place at Shopwise Supermarket on August 2, 2001.

Inside Mr Farrugia’s car the police found a stapler that had his fingerprints on it and nothing else that might have linked him to the crime, Magistrate Neville Camilleri noted.

But the stapler itself was neither used in the hold-up nor stolen from the shop, he added.

Lawyer Edward Gatt represented the accused.
