The beauty of Malta’s landscapes has been captured on canvas by Tonio Mallia in a set of watercolour paintings.

The artist shows tactile sensitivity in the representation of natural surroundings. The paintings’ bleak fascination belies a harmonious composition of texture and contrast, with each work bristling with indomitable energy.

He relentlessly experiments with the watercolour medium with the aim of discovering new form of personal expression.
These make use of strong composition, effective manipulation of light and shadow, together with an atmospheric handling of the medium, to achieve captivating results.

Chromatic effects are achieved by the skilled manipulation of paint and ink, including the blending process or wet-in-wet.

Some colours appear to resonate while others seem to be deposited sediments in the land.

The exhibition runs until January 15 at art.e Gallery at 1, Library Street, Victoria between 9.15am and 12.15pm.

Private viewing can be arranged by calling 9980 4774/2155 7911 or via e-mail at artgallerygozo@gmail.com.
