Malta has ranked fifth on the Consumer Markets Scoreboard, which is an indicator of how markets are functioning for EU consumers. 

The government said in a statement that Malta was the only southern European country to rank among the top five. It outperformed the UK and France as position just behind Finland, which placed fourth.

It performed better or at par with the EU27 with respect to 11 out 21 goods market and 14 out of 28 service markets. 

It obtained the topmost position in bank accounts services where Malta ranked at the top. The highest drop was witnessed for local transport where Malta ranked among the lowest positions.

Malta ranked 17th in 2010 and 11th in 2011.
