Firework factories taking part in next year’s mechanical fireworks festival, organised by the Floriana local council, will have to ensure that the flames are contained.

According to new regulations, the displays – known as nar ta’ l-art – must be built in a way that ensures that flares from the fireworks cannot be expelled outwards, festival coordinator Noel Castillo explained.

He was speaking during the launch of the seventh edition of the national festival for mechanical fireworks.

As with previous editions, the festival will be held on April 13 – the eve of the feast of St Publius.

Floriana mayor Nigel Holland said: “Despite the danger that some associate fireworks with, there are thousands of people who truly enjoy viewing them. We feel that the event deserves to take place during a festive time which is why we chose the period around the village feast.”

Sixteen fireworks factories will be competing in the festival, which will last about an hour-and-a-half. Each will present two displays with the aim of winning the title of Malta’s fireworks champion.

Next year, for the first time, 25 per cent of the vote will be entrusted to representatives of the participants themselves while the reminder will be cast by a panel of foreign experts, Mr Holland said.

He insisted that, as in previous years, all necessary measures would be put in place to ensure the public’s safety and place them at a safe distance.

He said an accident in 2009 was an “unfortunate incident” as even back then safety measures were in place.

That year a 13-year-old boy was injured when a piece of firework flew off a Catherine wheel and hit him in the face even though he was behind barriers.

Mr Holland guaranteed that those present would have a good time while appreciating Maltese talent. The festival will be free of charge.
