Internal auditors and their value to audit committees and management came under the spotlight at the Malta Forum for Internal Auditors’ annual international conference last month. About 100 internal auditors, local and non-Maltese senior executives, and chairmen and directors attended.

The theme was addressed by MFIA chairman Christopher Borg and two keynote speakers, Jean Pierre Garitte, ex-president of the International Institute of Internal Auditors and the institute’s current global ambassador, and Franco Azzopardi, a local practitioner, who chairs and holds directorships in private entities.

Mr Borg later moderated a panel discussion which also included Bank of Valletta chief executive Charles Borg, Ernst and Young Malta managing partner Ronald Attard, and PWC Malta senior partner Simon Flynn.

The discussion raised issues like internal auditor’s role in boosting corporate governance and risk management, the professional’s changing profile and the role of internal audit function as a strategic training ground.
