Not enough University students take part in activities that are not related to their course despite the high educational value, Jonathan Falzon said during his graduation speech.
Those students – who did not get involved in activities because they were not interested in anything they were not examined on – did not grasp the leap between school and University.
“It is no wonder then that I’ve spoken to University students, who are meant to be adults, who are still scared of telling a lecturer that they disagree with something he said for fear of losing marks during an exam,” he said.
He also came across students who did not offer their criticism on the way subjects were administered, failing to keep in mind the students that would follow.
This was leading to a situation where feedback collected by the University remained anonymous and student participation was low, said Mr Falzon, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science, Honours, degree.
On the other hand, he said, there were a few lecturers who did not appreciate students’ feedback.
In her speech, law graduate Danica Caruana echoed the need for more university students to get involved in activities on campus.
She said the university years were meant to be the best of their lives and they could choose how rich to make the experience.
She also spoke about the importance of having more student-lecturer contact hours.
