Updated: Xewkija-Victoria road inaugurated

Roads Minister Austin Gatt this morning inaugurating the newly-rebuilt road between Xewkija and Victoria in Gozo and the rebuilt road to the Cirkewwa ferry terminal.

In a ceremony in Gozo, he said the 3.1km road to Victoria had cost €12 million - the project being partly financed by the EU.

The works formed part of the Ten-T road network. Other works in hand as part of Ten-T include the rebuilding of the Mellieha Bypass and the underpass at December 13 Road in Marsa.

Dr Gatt said the missing link in the Ten-T project was the tunnel between Malta and Gozo, The government is processing a call for tenders for a feasibility study.

The new road between Xewkija and Victoria includes culverts and pipes for farmers to receive second-class treated water from the Ras il-Hobs plant in Xewkija.

Those present for the inauguration of the new road included Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, who pointed out that 12 sculptures and other works of art decorate the road, the artists having won a competition for the purpose.

and what trees were planted when they finished the first stretch of road are all leaning towards the ground, must have been drunk when they planted them. It took 3 ministers to inaugurate the road, they are that busy vote hunting.

In fact:
The Connecticut Turnpike with 4 lines on each side cost €1.65 million per km
The New Jersey Turnpike with 3 lanes on each side cost €1.05 million per km
The Pennyslvania Turnpike with 2 lanes on each side cost €0.94 million per km

The Mgarr to Victoria Road (with 1 lane on each side and hold water every time it rains) cost €3.87 million per km.

Indeed, no cycling lanes at all, but pavements wide enough to park car and trucks.

Sure, that includes expensive equipment, manpower, insurance, maintenance on the equipment, surveying, removing the old road etc. Quality costs but of course the Maltese never ever understand that concept.

Mr Caruana, maybe you're asking too much. Let's just start by installing water drainage that caters for normal rainfalls at the moment. Then, when we get another EU funds, we'll destroy everything and start from scratch. By the way, I'm just being sarcastic!

That is the tragedy of Malta. These pathetic ministers have nothing better to do. What I ask is "why do contractors take years to make a road that's only a couple of KM long"? It's hardly digging through mountain or underwater!

LUDICROUS AND PATHETIC COUNTRY!
