Updated: Xewkija-Victoria road inaugurated
Roads Minister Austin Gatt this morning inaugurating the newly-rebuilt road between Xewkija and Victoria in Gozo and the rebuilt road to the Cirkewwa ferry terminal.
In a ceremony in Gozo, he said the 3.1km road to Victoria had cost €12 million - the project being partly financed by the EU.
The works formed part of the Ten-T road network. Other works in hand as part of Ten-T include the rebuilding of the Mellieha Bypass and the underpass at December 13 Road in Marsa.
Dr Gatt said the missing link in the Ten-T project was the tunnel between Malta and Gozo, The government is processing a call for tenders for a feasibility study.
The new road between Xewkija and Victoria includes culverts and pipes for farmers to receive second-class treated water from the Ras il-Hobs plant in Xewkija.
Those present for the inauguration of the new road included Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, who pointed out that 12 sculptures and other works of art decorate the road, the artists having won a competition for the purpose.

In Sydney we are having an orbital connection of highways of 40km called the Westlink M7 to the cost of $A2.23 billion. However we still complain.

So what's the big deal...? We're paying 'just enough' taxes to have all our roads better than this... ! No news value at all.... just plain political propaganda !... which road's next ?

What is happening on our islands, specially on the roads, is disgusting, cutting trees, narrow roads, bottle neck roads, houses in the middle of the roads, some roads looks like a rough sea.2012 and still the same like when I was born almost 100 years ago.Well we must try other new people to manage our islands.

I have barely seen a tree in the video clip

and what trees were planted when they finished the first stretch of road are all leaning towards the ground, must have been drunk when they planted them. It took 3 ministers to inaugurate the road, they are that busy vote hunting.

That's 3.87 million per km. I wonder what the price per km is for the really state of the art roads built by our Northern European neighbours and the time they take per km.

per km of a single lane road on each side mind you mhux xi 4/5 lane per side.

In fact:
The Connecticut Turnpike with 4 lines on each side cost €1.65 million per km
The New Jersey Turnpike with 3 lanes on each side cost €1.05 million per km
The Pennyslvania Turnpike with 2 lanes on each side cost €0.94 million per km
The Mgarr to Victoria Road (with 1 lane on each side and hold water every time it rains) cost €3.87 million per km.

As we speak in the locality that I live in the UK a big project is on the way, including the rebuilding of the motorway and the side roads around it. All it took to finish was 5 months and there s nothing else to do to it. Amazing. What you won t see after us Ministers or from the council showing off! And the reason is that it s their job!! Let s cut these 'fanfarunati'

Within minutes like all new roads it will be ruined with patches of concrete from overflowing bowsers and trails of soil and rubble from trucks exiting from fields and construction sites. As usual no enforcement will be forthcoming.

The 12 m road is shamefull and certainly are not EU standard. When rain comes it is a disaster. They hold lot of water on the surface. They are horrible. Drainage is still a big problem in these new roads. You can smell it.

I am now 68 years old and I think it most unlikely that I shall ever experience the tunnel between Malta and Gozo. I somehow doubt that my children or grand-children will, either. A few years ago there was talk of a cable car to connect Malta, Comino and Gozo. That was clearly "pie in the sky" (excuse the pun). I have a nasty feeling that the tunnel project will be "pie in the earth".

Much ado about nothing. The road is still bumpy in places especially where tarmac meets tarmac. Ill-placed bus stops; too large roundabouts; no trees; not enough draining facilities. But I do love the sculptures. Well done artists.

Well done. Missing tunnel....... Why spend a few million on the feasibillity study when everyone knows that the tunnel will never be built. It would be insane to built it, spending as the Hon. Minister said a few weeks ago 600/700 million Euros on it.

Sure, that includes expensive equipment, manpower, insurance, maintenance on the equipment, surveying, removing the old road etc. Quality costs but of course the Maltese never ever understand that concept.

At least we are getting rid of the old, "lunar surface" roads!
Having said that it is unaccepable that in 2012 we are unable to construct "state of the art" roads with adequate water drainage capacity for when the heavy rains come.
Joseph Borg
Dec 4th 2012, 11:11
Mr Caruana, maybe you're asking too much. Let's just start by installing water drainage that caters for normal rainfalls at the moment. Then, when we get another EU funds, we'll destroy everything and start from scratch. By the way, I'm just being sarcastic!
Austin Grech
Dec 4th 2012, 10:46
If it was built with some form of cutting edge technology that helps drivers drive better. I could fathom the pomp of opening this road. But it's not. Its just a simple ordinary road. That took too long to build, cost too much to pay and holds water when it rains. Hardly an event worth mentioning.

Yet again another road receiving EU aid. Would it have been done if there was no aid from the EU?
Konrad Scicluna
Dec 4th 2012, 10:25
Does this mean that TM, in their haste to inaugurate it, are accepting this street with all its problems?
Does it mean the residents have to make do with this type of road that keeps getting flooded everytime it rains heavily? See http://flic.kr/s/aHsjD1R7Wt
If this is so then it is really shameful and the EU who has given finalcial assistance should be advised as to what is being done.

That is the tragedy of Malta. These pathetic ministers have nothing better to do. What I ask is "why do contractors take years to make a road that's only a couple of KM long"? It's hardly digging through mountain or underwater!
LUDICROUS AND PATHETIC COUNTRY!
