A woman caught on closed circuit camera stealing gas cylinders was yesterday ordered to do community work to “give something back to society”.

Genesia Randich, 26, of Marsascala, pleaded guilty to the theft at different locations between November 14 and 26.

“There are two options: I’m either going to send you to prison or give you community work,” Magistrate Francesco Depasquale said after hearing Ms Randich plead guilty. “I think that you should do some work to give something back to the community,” he added.

Ms Randich was apprehended after footage of her stealing four gas cylinders from a house in Marsascala was posted on Facebook and You Tube.

With a cigarette in her mouth, Ms Randich is seen opening a gate of a house in Battery Street, walking into the garden and helping herself to the cylinders. She then loaded the cylinders into a white car.

She admitted stealing six cylinders from three residences in Marsaxlokk – two from each – another two from Gudja and five from Marsascala.

She also pleaded guilty to driving a car without a valid driving licence.

Magistrate Depasquale ordered that a probation officer would make a verbal report on the community work she could do.

Police Inspectors Carol Fabri and Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo appeared for Ms Randich as legal aid.

The arraignment comes after a series of thefts and break-ins were solved when the victims posted images and footage on the internet in a bid to identify the perpetrators.

Earlier this month, CCTV footage was uploaded on You Tube showing a man taking cash from an office at Summit Importers and Distributors in Tal-Balal, limits of San Ġwann.
