The Marsa racetrack yesterday hosted the 55th meeting of the season which was made up of nine races, all for trotters.

Eight of these races were semi-finals from various SECF Championships for French trotters while the other was reserved for Premier Class horses.

Ten trotters lined up at the start of the Premier Class race, with victory going to Nabab du Chatelet, under the guidance of Charles Camilleri.

It was Ouest Mabon (Michael Ghigo) the fastest horse in the early stages, opening a half-length lead from Milord Barbes (Frenċu Cassar) and Nabab du Chatelet (Charles Camilleri).

Around 600m from the end, Ouest Mabon started to slow down and Nabab du Chatelet took the lead, closely followed by Lady de Vindecy (Julian Farrugia) and Nuage de Bourgogne (Herman McKay).

Lady de Vindecy dropped out of contention after changing pace while Nuage de Bourgogne crossed the finish line first but was later disqualified. Victory went to Nabab du Chatelet for its fourth success of the year in an average time of 1.16.9” per kilometre.

Magic de Assigny (Redent Magro), Natieu d’Echal (Brian Hili) and Nino de Saintho (Cliferty Calleja) claimed the other top-four spots.

In the first semi-final from the Prix d’Enghien for Gold Class trotters, it was Orion du Vaumicel (Cassar) which led all the way.

This 10-year-old horse gained its second win in a row from Onyx Lucernais (Jason Cordina), Onyx Speed (Christian Xerri), Orion de Chapeau (Chris Vassallo) and Magnifique Sablais (Julian Farrugia).

In the other semi-final from the Gold Class, it was Night Inlet (Noel Baldacchino) which took its fourth win of the season.

Night Inlet increased its speed with a lap to go and had to go all out in the final straight to finish ahead of Quebec (Mark Mifsud), Niky de Memartin (Jonathan Zammit), Natif de Salvi (Kurt Saliba) and Niky du Donjon (Joe Vella).

From the two semi-finals for Silver Class trotters, 10 horses qualified for the final stage.

There was a keen tussle in the first semi-final when five horses sprinted together in the final metres.

It was Orage du Pont (Charles Camilleri) which secured its fourth win of the year from Oscar de France (David Ellul), Max Galbe (Redent Magro), Octobre En Fete (Raymond Micallef) and Pascal d’Ablon (Ramon Briffa).

Notre Allegro (Michael Ghigo) dashed strongly from the outside midway through the final straight of the second Silver Class semi-final.

This French 11-year-old went on to record its second win of the year from Prao de Bussy (Ivan Stivala). Korentin (Michael Ellul), Passons d’Ortige (Herman McKay) and Narcus du Roc (Rodney Gatt) followed home in that order.
