Ships Company from the British Royal Naval vessel HMS Illustrious gave a helping hand in a clean-up event in Pembroke. Despite the rain, in just two hours, the crew members managed to collect over 208 kilos of waste from the Madliena Tower area.

The event, organised by Nature Trust (Malta), was supported by the Malta Tourism Authority. The waste collected consisted of various items, including metal, ceramics, paper wrappers and a large number of plastic bottles.

Nature Trust (Malta) president Vincent Attard thanked the HMS Illustrious commanding officer and crew for dedicating time towards Malta’s natural heritage. He said it was evident from the waste collected that many people enjoyed picnics on site but left their litter behind.

Such irresponsible behaviour was contributing to the degradation of ecologically important sites in Malta.

Lt Elizabeth Kennedy from HMS Illustrious said it was important that all were involved in keeping such a beautiful island clean and preserved for future generations.

“It was a privilege for my team of volunteers to be allowed to help in this way.”
