This year has been an important one for the George Cross Island Association (GCIA) as it commemorates the 70th anniversary of the bestowing of the George Cross to Malta on April 15, 1942.

To mark this event, a number of activities were held earlier this year. These events were attended by the Duke of Gloucester, Maltese dignitaries, ambassadors and veterans.

Other notable occasions included the commemoration of Operation Pedestal outside Ta’ Liesse church in Valletta. Wreaths were laid in the Grand Harbour and a new monument was unveiled in honour of fallen sailors.

Members of the GCIA were recently invited on board the HMS Enterprise. The vessel is an echo class hydrographical survey ship. A unique insight was offered of both a serving Royal Navy ship and more civilian roles related to surveying the sea.

To end a busy year the GCIA Malta branch held its AGM recently, whereby the new committee was elected and the important announcement was made that with immediate effect the Malta branch would resume responsibility for the organisation of the April 15 Siege Bell Memorial Service.

After the AGM, the committee hosted its annual lunch, which had an added significance since it marked the 25th anniversary of when the association was constituted and the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the Siege Bell memorial.

Present at the lunch were the Russian and US Ambassadors, the British High Commissioner, the Australian Deputy High Commissioner, the New Zealand honorary consul and the association’s president Michael Refalo. War veterans were also among the distinguished guests.

Members of the public, not necessarily ex-servicemen, who would like to know more about the GCIA and membership are invited to e-mail gciamalta@melita.com.
