Police are waiting for the Hungarian man who allegedly stabbed his partner to death on Monday to be released from hospital to charge him with her murder.

The man, 45-year-old Laszlo Marton, is currently in hospital recovering from what police believe to be a number of self-inflicted scissor wounds. His condition is not serious.

He is expected to be charged with killing his 38-year-old partner Yvette Gajda, a mother-of-two, who was found dead in her flat with more than 40 wounds to her neck on Ephesus Street, St Paul’s Bay.

It is believed that Mr Marton used the same pair of scissors which he then used to stab himself.

Neighbours, who described the couple as heavy drinkers, said the two had been arguing loudly all morning and described hearing angry yells and the sounds of smashed crockery. The fracas died down at around 11.25am. Minutes later, an ambulance and police car were on the scene.

Ms Gajda was already dead when police found her body in the apartment. Mr Marton was also found at the scene of the crime with self-inflicted injuries.

A Hungarian family friend who also lived in the apartment reportedly witnessed the crime, along with the two girls, aged 17 and five.

Autopsy results released on Wednesday confirmed that Ms Gajda died of hypovolemic shock caused by severe blood loss.

Just three years ago, Ms Gajda was a contender on Hungarian reality show Benkö feleséget keres (Benko’s looking for a wife), in which women competed for the affections of B-list Hungarian celebrity Daniel Benko. Ms Gajda did not win the contest.

In Malta, she worked on and off as a cleaner and had previously been a model and shop assistant.

Meanwhile, in an unconnected case, on Wednesday evening two men, of British origin, were involved in a fight in a bar in Horatio Nelson Street in St Paul’s Bay.

At about 7pm police were informed about the fight and, while on the way, officers encountered an injured 40-year-old man and administered first aid.

The man, who lives in St Julian’s, was taken to Mater Dei Hospital where he was certified as suffering from serious injuries, police said.

Another man, 63, from St Paul’s Bay, suffered slight injuries and was referred to hospital for treatment. No weapons were used in the fight.
