Six whipped by Islamists
Islamist extremists controlling the city of Timbuktu publicly whipped six young people, residents say.
The victims, males and females aged between 16 to 22, each received 100 lashes for having talked to each other on the city streets.
Aboubacrine Yattara, who lives in Timbuktu and witnessed the whippings, said the young people were arrested last week. They were flogged today in Timbuktu's small market.
The head of the Islamist brigade responsible for customs in Timbuktu, Mohamed Ag Mossa Intoulou, did not deny the whippings but said he could not comment.

In every place where church/mosque gets in bed with the state, immorality and human rights abuses always follow - whatever the religion. Uganda is right now set to pass a law, supported by the Catholic church, which calls for the death penalty for gay people. Only secularism - separation of church and state - prevents these abuses.

Those who depict Islam as just another religion should try explaining away such barbaric customs. Egyptians and others had better defend their hard won revolutions, or they would finish up in a similar situation, when it will be bye bye to the milions earned from western tourists.
