The allegations of impropriety levelled at the head of the Government’s internal audit bureau, Rita Schembri, should be looked into by the Attorney General, the Labour Party said.

The Prime Minister should ask the Attorney General to establish whether Ms Schembri’s involvement in private business had compromised her public obligation as laid out in the Constitution, the Public Service Act and the Public Service Management Code, which regulates civil servants.

Ms Schembri is facing allegations by businessman Philip Rizzo that she used her office at the Internal Audit and Investigations Department, which she heads, to discuss a bid for the Casinò di Venezia on behalf of a foreign bidder.

The case is already subject to an investigation by the Auditor General, which was called for by Ms Schembri herself, and to a police probe that is looking into allegations that important e-mails related to this issue were deleted.

However, Labour is also calling for the involvement of the Attorney General and has urged the Government to publish the findings, particularly since the allegations have been made public.
