What a few days these have been.

Ever since Dalli was sent packing with hardly enough time to close his attaché case we have witnessed quite a bit. A new EU commissioner was chosen and after a grilling and a keenly expected contest our Tonio romped home to an easy victory, even if some liberal Europeans shone through in their grave illiberality.

Then we had a new Bishop installed. So much is happening that we hardly realised the good little guy is in, hopefully, to rein in the other Bishop (of Gozo) who was slowly but dramatically taking over the mantle of chief medievalist. Then we had a budget which, thanks to Franco's childish pranks, might be no budget at all. But all is fair in this world because all the budgetary measures—give and take a few here or there—will be carried forward even if Labour win the coveted prime position at Castille. Was so much excitement enough? Not at all—Friday sees a new PN deputy leader.

Tonio Fenech has just produced some magical rabbits out of his budgetary hat. So, though the chances of that budget making it get dimmer every day, all hail to him. Our country is on the right course and all around us ring and sing our praises so hurrah to the budget and may the measures be put into practice for Malta to glide on in prosperity.

In fact, interestingly enough, Dr Muscat never said the Government is being extravagant or idiotic in what they have proposed. Dr Muscat said more of the same will be dished out. No words of caution that hey the country can't do all this because we have problems. According to Labour, the problem is that not enough was done to dish out more.

So Labour does have more than a pinch of faith in our economy and the way it is headed. Amazing no?

But back to the amazing few days. The fight between Tonio Fenech and Simon Busuttil is a titanic one. If Simon wins, the political field will have a new, more interesting leader in the making. Tonio is more of the same. So for more interesting days ahead and for the PN to get a whiff of a chance of winning the next election, Simon should be the one to back.

Otherwise the field is easier for Labour. And we, silly onlookers, love a tussle to the end and not an immediate knockout which will see Labour romp home to their much longed-for victory (longed-for by all labourites that is).
