Price rises for cigarettes, fuel and cement

Updated - Duty on cigarettes will rise by 6% meaning an increase in cigarette prices of between 20 and 30c per packet.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said during the Budget speech that  prices for other tobacco products will rise by 8%.

Duty on petrol and diesel will rise by 2c per litre with immediate effect.

The duty on cement will rise by €5 per tonne.

Mr Fenech said the €25 million increase in subsidies to Enemalta, given last year, will be retained to keep energy prices stable.

Why should they be punished, Do you drive a car, then in my opinion you should be punished for filling the air with exhaust fumes, Its bad for my health.

Nov 29th 2012, 05:52

Funny, as a non smoker I think cars are the biggest nuisance. I bet you have a car, right? I don't. Can I punish you?

Its a problem an addiction like others its an absolute arrogance what you are saying

Peter Bonello

Car are a necessary evil for many! My self for one, I cannot depend on Arriva with its comprehensible, unreliable service in my busy day. On the other, having to inhale second hand smoke while having a drink with friends is not! And anyway, car owners are being punished as well, believe me!

its duty on fuel ... not price of fuel !! In Italy fuel is at 1,80€ per litre as duty is at 0.75€ per litre.

John Booth

Nov 28th 2012, 22:06

Did you see any reduction on the FUEL PRICE lately

Joseph Micallef

Nov 28th 2012, 23:32

@ A. Camilleri,

Tista jekk jogħġbok tipprovdina naqra bi statistika l-pagi medji ta' l-Italja? Forsi tkun tista tilluminani iktar. Grazzi.

This means that Diesel and Petrol will increase again. With prices being unrealistically high as per usual.

Alex Falzon

Its just 2c...

Marita Magro

Nov 28th 2012, 21:27

alex its 2c per litre extra tax ...

J Grima

Nov 28th 2012, 22:21

It's 2c per litre Alex. Go do the maths & calculate how much that would be for a full tank. Not to mention that it could be the difference between being able to survive on your wage till the end of the month or not for some people, but of course, why would you worry about them.....

They should implement extra income tax to selfish people like yourself, how would you like that?

Joseph Micallef

Nov 28th 2012, 23:33

@ Alex Falzon,

Can you please start paying me the new extra difference? It's just 2c after all. You shouldn't find any trouble, should you?

S. Vella

Nov 29th 2012, 07:04

@J. Grima

The people you describe, the ones who cannot afford the 2c rise in petrol, should not be driving a car. They obviously cannot afford it and should opt for cheaper alternatives such as motorbikes and buses.

J Grima

Nov 28th 2012, 22:25

It's duty tax & not because of the oil price getting higher and Angela, we're still part of the EU mess so if that goes down(which by the way seems to be very likely), we'll all go down with it and then we'll be the best of the worst.....YIPEEEE! Enjoy the smokescreen till it 'gets in your eyes'.

@ Joseph Fenech.

Please do remind me which schools did Malta have in the prior PN administration.

From what I remember, it was Mintoff and the MLP that came out with free schooling for all,

S. Vella

Nov 29th 2012, 07:09

It was also the MLP that tried to stop me from attending a church school. Later it was the MLP again that implemented a 20 points system with the express intent to try and deny me university.

MLP might have come up with free-schooling but only as long as the children were under its control. Socialist brainwashing at its best.

Mario Sammut

Nov 28th 2012, 20:41

Mr Joe Brincat,

Did you ever go to school when you were young?

You know the Government offers free school right? Maybe you can grow up for once......

Ronnie Callus

Nov 28th 2012, 20:54

Jesmond, not fuel prices is flactuating this time BUT the TAX.

J Grima

Nov 28th 2012, 22:33

Why am I not surprised that the like of Jesmond Zammit & Angela Muscat don't know what they're talking about, again.

Government should pass a law to test people on their knowledge before they vote as by the looks of it, they're clinically delusional or brainwashed, or both.
