The Federazzjoni Maltija Vetturi Antiki (FMVA) has welcomed the new licence and registration rates for certified classic vehicles announced in the Budget tonight by Finance Minister Tonio Fenech.

Under the new rules there will be no first registration tax for vehicles over 50 years old and the classic certification age was reduced to 30 years from 35 years.

The yearly road licence for all classic vehicles will now only be subject to an 8 administration fee every year.

The FMVA said it had lobbied the authorities on behalf of classic car enthusiasts for many months. It noted with satisfaction that its proposals were accepted.

These measures may eventually lead to Malta becoming a southern Mediterranean centre for classic car tourism and possibly even vehicle restoration services, according to the FMVA.
