Burning construction crane collapses in Sydney
A crane atop a high-rise building in Sydney, Australia, caught fire and collapsed yesterday.
The crane swayed violently before its arm collapsed, although it remained attached to the rest of the crane.
The crane is owned by Lend Lease, the same company that owned a crane that collapsed in New York City during Hurricane Sandy.
Officials say the crane was too high for fire fighters to reach.
Local media said hundreds of people were evacuated from nearby buildings, and traffic in central Sydney was thrown into chaos. No injuries were reported.

Didn't realise Australia ,and /or Sydney in particular, were like us -in that they don't have an active OHSA and if this happened here would our fire-fighting apparatus be able to reach such heights for this machinery or,more crucially, high-rise buildings occupied by people ? Is LEND LEASE a Maltese registered company?

Mr Murray, you are wrong on all counts. Australia has the toughest OHSA in the world particularly on building sites. There are thousands of cranes similar to the one in question throughout Australia and this type is accident is extremely rare -.unlike cranes in Malta where accidents are very frequent. Lend Lease is a very respected global Australian company building skyscrapers in many countries.
