Jewellery thieves caught on CCTV
Two men who allegedly stole jewellery from a Mellieħa shop were caught on closed circuit television and their photo is now being circulated on Facebook in the hope they can be caught.
The two young men, described as "professional" in the way they are said to have carried out the theft, first went to the Naxxar outlet of Vascas Jewellers on Saturday morning but did not take anything from there, sources said.

The duo then headed to the Mellieħa outlet and, while one of the men distracted the shop assistant, the other stealthily stole the jewellery, the sources said.
On looking at the CCTV footage, Vascas staff noticed that the men had just been in Naxxar where the images of them caught on camera were clearer. The clear images were then released on Facebook together with a message asking anyone who recognised the men to call the police.
This was the latest in a series of theft and break- ins that were placed on social media outlets by victims in an attempt to catch the thieves.
Earlier this month security camera footage was uploaded on Youtube showing a thief make his way through the premises of Summit Importers and Distributors in Tal- Balal, limits of San Ġwann.
In a separate incident, security footage uploaded on Facebook showed a man stealing a mobile phone from a Sliema shop.

Vera professional eh ! Do they look like they're shopping for Xmas gifts for the girlfriends to anyone by any chance ? Aaah how eagerly I wait to read they've been caught and given time to think about their views on how to make a living.

I fail to understand how these people even do this if they know cameras are there. I mean, were they going to fly to another country straight away to avoid it? Malta is quite small especially when your face is clearly shown by a CCTV.

Have serious doubts if they are maltese, these days lots of foreigners cross over from sicilly, some with cars loaded with cheap merchanise to sell going all round the island.

If these are 'Professional' thieves, then the amateur ones must be really stupid.
I doubt that they will have long careers outside of the Corradino Hilton.

They dont look like pros to me at all.
They both have hands behind their backs which is a clear sign of trouble.

Is it my imagination, but has crime increased since Malta joined the EU?
Peter Murray

Or is this possible increase ,as you suggest may be the case, a clear indication of recession -fuelled crime?

It used to be "Put the blame on Mame .... ". Now it seems to be "Put the blame on the European Union"!

While I don't know this shop personally, perhaps in the future all jewellery shops should have 2 or three assistants.
That might be a better deterrent than cameras, but of course still keep the cameras.

Cost is also a deterrent Pauline perhaps the greatest consideration of all.And while this may be false economy if more staff prevents more crime then on that basis we should have more police officers.I would suggest.

If these men are caught and turn out to be foreigners then, like Heuston we have a problem! We need to come down hard on these criminals of whatever nationality to send a very clear message. Crime in Malta does not pay.

I like your message and agree. But this is Malta...

Irrespective of their nationality they will probably get a more stiffer sentence than if they attacked a police officer!Another point- if they are EU citizens they can only be deported if they receive a custodial sentence of 2 years or more-another courtesy of EU law.

I wish you were right, but unfortunately, in Malta CRIME DOES PAY!
The timesofmalta is riddled with articles that prove that criminals are glorified and never forced to pay back the damage or items stolen, and most get off with a simple warning, even if it is their tenth time appearing in court.
But the most important thing is that our magistrates got their salary raise!

So Victor, if the theives turn out to be Maltese would that mean that there isn't a problem and it's ok?
Colin Stanley

I bet they are foreigners, not saying that the Maltese are all goodie, goodie. but i think that we are seeing certain crimes which are mostly done by our EU brothers, like mugging, the ease by which they enter a place in broad daylight, pickpocketing, theft of credit cards, begging not because they are poor, and I wouldn't be surprised, god forbid later on kidnapping.

Chris if the thieves are Maltese it would still be a problem but a self contained one. Lately we have been having quite a large number of thefts and crimes involving foreigners. We should screen whoever comes into our country. They could just as easily slip through our fingers back to their own country after committing a crime.
