Tearful Suha Arafat watches husband's exhumation from her Malta home

Yasser Arafat’s widow Suha wiped away tears this morning as she sat at home in Malta, watching television reports of the exhumation of her husband.

Arafat’s remains were exhumed in Ramallah to enable forensic experts to lift samples in a bid to establish whether poisoning had caused his death eight years ago.

She described her husband’s death as the “most important mystery in the Middle East”.

Mrs Arafat said she asked for samples to be taken from her husband’s remains because it would bring closure to the case, She said she owed that to Palestinian people all over the world, and her daughter.

She also said that she had not asked for an autopsy soon after her husband’s death because the body was taken away to Palestine by the Palestinian Authority.

Suha Arafat did not attend the exhumation this morning because she wanted the focus to be on her husband.

Read the full interview with Suha Arafat in tomorrow’s The Times.

Alfred, that would be nice BUT I doubt that the 'oppressed' can live side by side in dignity & harmony with the 'oppressors'.

Read this small fraction of history : http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/the-suffering-of-sderot-how-its-true-inhabitants-were-wiped-from-israels-maps-and-memories-8348734.html

@ J Grima

Indeed, it's a very sad story that exposes d ugly side of Israeli ambitions beyond their homeland, but not all Israelis are of d stuff mentioned in d report.

We need to bring d 2 sides as close to each other as possible!

And pinpoint the failings on each side.

Both are "oppressed peoples" (holocaust/eviction of Palestinians).

Two wrongs do not make a right!

What is your problem with her, she's more then welcome here and I am sure Israel does not object to her residence.

Israel does not care for its relationship with Malta except for when it involves votes at the UN General Assembly at which point Israel vis the US tries to curry favour from small nations to win token votes on issues which most every nation side with the Palestinians.

It seems to me that you do not know the recent history of the middle east and how we ended up with having as state called Israel and the whole population of Palestine ending up homeless and stateless.

@ John Grima - it appears that it is YOU who does not know the recent history of the Middle East. There are thousands of Palestinians living within the borders of Israel. It was only those Palestinians who were scared into fleeing Israel by their erstwhile Arab allies who ended up homeless and stateless. They have also remiained this way because they refuse to accept the Israeli State.

What is so wrong with 'souring our relations with Israel'? What's so special with Israel that all the world has to move according to the way Israel dictates?

And since when has Wikipedia become an official history book.

@L Apap : I don't know whether to laugh or cry. You're telling us that "they remiained this way because they refuse to accept the Israeli State." ! We Maltese refused to accept the English & French to colonize us & you're surprised that a native of his own country refuses to accept a state built on stolen land paid by blood of relatives? I think I'm just going to laugh it off & hope you're joking.

Mr Brincat, i would be interested in its history if it was not a people once oppressed now being the oppressors ... Israel depends on the history of its oppression to demand that it be allowed to oppress the Palestinians who are in the same boat "Stateless"

And why, pray, do we need to consider Israel's wishes and desires ? Do they consult us before waging war on others, perhaps ?
