Jailed 18 years for conspiracy to import drugs

Darren Charles Desira, 36, of Zebbug, was today jailed for 18 years and fined €46,000 after he admitted to conspiracy to import drugs.

Desira was arrested and charged in December 2002 along with two other men Joseph Borg, 49, of Ġzira and John Sultana, 48, of Xagħra.

A fourth man Gużeppi Sacco, also known as Is-Singis from Qrendi was also involved but died during proceedings against him.

Investigations revealed how the drugs had been brought to Malta on board a boat by Mr Borg following a delivery by Mr Sultana. The drugs were eventually meant for Mr Desira and Mr Sacco, the police said.

Mr Sultana and Mr Borg had admitted to their involvement and were jailed for 14 years and fined €51,246 and 13 years and fined €46,587 respectively in 2005.

Tim.. if you google Sentenzi Online you will get the website run by the ministry whereby you can read all sentences in PDF. This I think is available a few days after sentencing. Practically any case even going back years. The sentence usually has all the details ( Including the usual pompous legal related wording )

@ Joe Mallia: To the best of my knowledge Tea and Coffee are not yet illegal despite their addictive properties! The sentence does however seem somewhat harsh but obviously we don't know the full circumstances re class of drug, quantity etc and / or the accused's previous drug related criminal record if indeed he has one. Another case that has taken a decade to conclude thereby diluting justice.
