The EU's Committee of Permanent Representatives has rubber stamped the appointment of Tonio Borg as Commissioner for Health and Consumer Affairs.

The nomination now goes before the Council of Ministers for final, formal approval tomorrow morning.

Dr Borg is expected to deliver his last address in Parliament this evening and will resign as minister and MP tomorrow morning.

He has been an MP for 20 years and a minister since 2004, serving as minister for justice, home affairs and foreign minister.

He is expected to take up his appointment in the Commission on Friday.
