Former mayor loses libel cases

Mosta’s former mayor Paul Chetcuti Caruana has been ordered to pay a total of €2,000 in damages to construction magnate Nazzareno Vassallo after two articles he penned were found to be libellous.

The two articles were entitled the The Vomit of Zaren Vassallo, published on August 27, 2008 in the Maltese newspaper l-Orizzont, and The Untouchables, published in the local council magazine Il-Kunsill Tiegħek.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale heard how the articles centred on a number of disputes between Mr Vassallo, as president of the Nicolò Isouard Philharmonic Society, and Dr Chetcuti Caruana as mayor.

The editor of the local magazine, Ivan Bartolo, was ordered to pay €100.
