Young people’s lifestyle today is widely discussed. Some criticise the younger generation while others find themselves confused by the behaviour of some of them and are unable to understand why they live that way.

For most of us, summer is a time of relaxation and holidays. Some continue with their daily lives, while trying to fit in all that they do not have time for throughout the rest of the year. However, some opt to spend their free time helping others in need.

This was our experience as a youth group this summer. As members of Connections, the St Julian’s parish youth group, we decided to do some voluntary work at St Vincent De Paul’s home for the elderly. This was an experience we will never forget.

These are some comments by those who took part:

“When spending time with elderly people, one clearly notices their knowledge and experience when it comes to life’s decisions. This made me realise how important it is to live your life properly and carefully.”

“Their need to share their life’s experiences was very evident.”

“The fact that I tried my best to give my time for this cause filled me with happiness.”

“As in every experience of voluntary work I’ve had, I have completely changed the way I think of the people I work with. I was astonished by how cool the elderly can be.”

“Helping someone in need is extremely satisfying.”

The time spent with the elderly made us reflect on our own lives. This, in turn, made us feel closer not only to other people but also to God.

Apart from this, other members of the group also helped in the parish’s children’s summer school. This was also very successful and beneficial for both the parish and the young people who volunteered.

Now that we have experienced the joy of voluntary work we really think that this is merely the tip of the iceberg and we are now planning more intensive voluntary work such as a visit to a foreign country as lay missionaries. We would like to thank all those who have made this possible for us and we encourage others to participate in this type of voluntary work.
