The cultural heritage NGO Wirt Għawdex has often urged the government to restore the ridge of St John’s Cavalier, along the walls of the Citadel in Victoria, especially since some stone blocks were in danger of collapsing, posing a serious danger to people visiting the area.
Wirt Għawdex is now pleased to note that this cavalier has been skilfully restored as part of the Citadel master plan. The ongoing restoration work should uncover the Citadel’s original beauty. Once the restoration works are complete, Wirt Għawdex feels that a management team should be set up to ensure that this national monument will not be allowed to deteriorate and to manage ongoing maintenance works and organise activities around the site.
This team should be made up of representatives of all stakeholders within the Citadel and Wirt Għawdex and take over from the restoration team immediately, the NGO maintained.
