A new 500-page volume about the life and times of the late former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff, Mintoff: Il-Bniedem u l-Istorja has been launched by Sensiela Kotba Soċjalisti, the editorial house of the Labour Party. The book aims to initiate a discussion on the political leader and on the relevance he might have for current and future generations of Maltese.

Edited by Mario Cutajar, a former deputy general secretary of the General Workers Union, the book offers a wide array of analyses and studies concerning the exploration of Mintoff’s life, his personality, exploits and thoughts. It is presented in the form of a collection of 26 contributions by different authors from a sociological, anthropological, historical, economical and political point of view. Together, these proffer an inter-disciplinary invitation for further reflections.

The book also includes some 11 writings or speeches by Mintoff himself, as well as many photographs (some appearing for the first time) from Mintoff’s private and public life, taken from collections in Malta and the UK.

Through the publication, SKS does not aim to construct a cult or a monolithic vision of Mintoff but, on the contrary, to offer readers the possibility of moving beyond partisan viewpoints and perceptions, and to begin to look upon Mintoff’s personality and figure in a manner which will be as objective as possible.

The main purpose behind Mintoff: Il-Bniedem u l-Istorja is not to tender a final word on the subject. It is hoped that the publication will stimulate and inspire readers to avoid passionate or hasty judgements about Mintoff, and to begin discovering him in the context of the material conditions which made him possible and the limitations within which Mintoff understook his political, social, economic and cultural ventures.

The volume is designed by Alan Piscopo and Ishmael Borg and all contributions target a wide audience. The book is available from the SKS Office, National Labour Centre, Ħamrun and from leading bookstores.
