Qormi boosted their hopes of a late charge for a Championship Pool berth when they stunned title hopefuls Hibernians 1-0 at the National Stadium.

It was a merited victory for the Yellow-Blacks who despite playing second fiddle to their opponents for much of the match they waited impatiently to hit their opponents with their quick raids, inspired by their attacking trio of Edison Bilbao Zarate, Sebastiano Siritto and Aboubakar Bello Osagie.

It was Hibs who dominated proceedings in the first half and they were unlucky not to take the lead late in the first half when Anderson Ribeiro’s shot was deflected into the path of Andrew Cohen who with only Qormi goalkeeper Matthew Farrugia to beat he saw his shot hit the cross bar.

After the interval, Qormi started to grow in stature and with Hibs struggling to make their dominance count, the Yellow-Blacks struck the winner nine minutes from time.

In a quick-break, Joseph Chetcuti served Leighton Grech who sidestepped his marker before burying the ball past goalkeeper Mario Muscat.

Qormi’s Edison Bilbao Zarate was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
