Sliema Stompers have underlined their faith in younger stars by naming Sam Borg (picture) as the club’s fifth captain in their history.

The position became vacant after Malcolm Attard announced he was stepping down from the post after committing himself to coaching the newly-formed women’s team as well as the Stompers Minis.

Serbian-born Dragan Cerketa is the club’s vice-captain for the new season which has just started.

Attard said he thoroughly en-joyed captaining the side but felt he wouldn’t be able to fully dedicate himself to leading the team in the national league and allocate enough time for coaching.

He told Stompersrugby.com: “There is huge experience and other great leaders at Stompers and I believe that the lads selected will be able to more than step up to the role and thrive under the responsibility.”

Borg, of Sliema, received his rugby education at the Oratory School, Berkshire, which established itself as one of the best rugby playing homes in the United Kingdom by receiving the Independent School of the Year, an award Borg accepted as the school’s first XV rugby captain.

Borg, 22, also represented Henley Hawks and Cornwall select teams.

His rugby highlights were captaining the Exeter University team and representing the senior national team.

“I am happy to be given the responsibility to captain the side,” Borg said.

“There is huge quality in the team and the club has a great set-up and atmosphere. I hope that my contribution can help continue this positive feel and improve it further.”
