Mepa has granted a permit for the building of a Carnival Village at Corradino, the  Malta Council for Culture and the Arts said today. The Village will be composed of 21 workshops.

Culture Minister Mario de Marco said that Carnival participants deserved to work  in purposely-built facilities. This project, he said, is a clear manifestation of the government’s support of this long-standing Maltese cultural tradition.

The president of the Malta Association of Carnival Participants, Jason Busuttil welcomed the development.   He said that this project would address a long standing need by providing suitable all year-round facilities to Carnival participants. Whilst maintaining its position that it would have preferred a site closer to Valletta, the Association said that it would fully support this project.

The workshops are expected to be completed in time to be used by float builders in preparation for Carnival 2014
