Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has purchased replicas of two 24-pounder iron carronades on two-wheeled garrison carriages, with the financial support of Bank of Valletta.

Such carronades were developed in the late 18th century by the Scottish iron works and gun makers Carron of Falkirk.

The replicas are to be placed along one of the flanks of the St Peter and Paul counter-guard in Valletta which forms part of the new military heritage park to be opened shortly in the Lascaris area. This will include the Saluting Battery, the Lascaris War HQ, the late-war Lascaris War Rooms, the Garrison Chapel Crypt and the counter-guard. This initiative will chart some 500 years of continuous Maltese military heritage.

"The solid relationship between BOV and the Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has seen the conservation of historical sites such as the Saluting Battery at the Upper Barrakka Gardens and Fort Rinella," said Mario Farrugia, Chairman Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna.

"Through this same collaboration, the Bank and Fondazzjoni organised several public events for the enjoyment of the public and to create more awareness about Malta's rich and colourful history". Through such projects resulting from partnerships with NGOs, Bank of Valletta contributes to enrich the visitor's - either local or foreign - experience of Malta's rich history.

The carronades were brought to Malta by Express Trailers free of charge.
