A board of inquiry set up by the Ministry of Health in January found that some members of the Accreditation Committee for Dentistry Specialists could have had a conflict of interest, leading to possible vitiation of the qualifications evaluation process.

The board was set up following a complaint by university representatives on the committee that an accredited applicant might not have had all the necessary qualifications, and that some committee members could have had a conflict of interest.

Answering a parliamentary question by Opposition whip Joe Mizzi yesterday, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said the board had also evaluated the criteria used for accreditation and concluded they were not adequate for the evaluation.

The report had been sent to the Accreditation Committee for Dentistry Specialists for its reactions. The committee had been asked to inform the Superintendent of Public Health what steps it envisaged taking. Another copy of the report had been sent to the Medical Council.

Dr Cassar said Mr Mizzi’s request for the report to be made public could not be entertained, but he was willing to let the MP have a copy of the report in confidence.
