The situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly critical for the civilian population as bombing by the Israeli military continues unabated, Karl Schembri, a Maltese who works in the region said.

Mr Schembri said the situation was not normal even before the bombing, but the bombing was causing a serious shortage of medicines in Gaza's hospitals as well as a shortage of fuel throughout the strip.

He said that in Gaza City hospital today he had witnessed many civilians admitted to hospital suffering shrapnel wounds, with the most serious cases being transferred to Egypt.

“The doctors told me it is mostly women, children, babies and the elderly that had the most serious amputations,” said Mr Schembri, media officer for development NGO Oxfam in Gaza City.
