Low turnout for Stiletto fun run
Malta’s first Bupa Stiletto Fun Race was a disappointment this morning, with only some 50 people turning up at Ta' Qali.
More disappointing was the fact that hardly any men took up the challenge to run the 700 metre course with a minimum heel height of 7.5cm and only a few participants were in costume.
The activity was held to raise funds for L-Istrina.

...This was all for charity and for those like me who loves a challenge and are careful preferred to run. Ask yourselves..how many times were you at a wedding and ran your way to the coffee and sweets table to be first? You could have twisted your ankle there too don't you agree? Well done to all the organisers and look forward for the second run next year :-)

It seems there are many people out there who are blind & cant read properly. When the Stiletto Run was promoted it said that participants can wear stilettos along a 700mtrs track jogging, power walk or strut your way. So if you wanted to participate & help Istrina, you could have just walked in stilettos and even in normal shoes.

Perhaps because the majority thought it was a stupid idea? Just because it's for charity, it doesn't mean that one has to make a fool of himself.

When will we learn?

Sarah, you could have just walked in stilettos or normal shoes. And the fools are those who stay at home commenting on a charitable event.
When will we learn?

Had the article carried by The Times last Thursday said that the run was to be 700m and not 7KM, perhaps many more would have taken up the challenge in the name of fun and charity.

"More disappointing was the fact that hardly any men took up the challenge to run the 700 metre course with a minimum heel height of 7.5cm..."
I trust that The Times are being ironic now. Having said that, I was almost sold a pair of red pumps when living in Amsterdam, when they mixed up the boxes. I remarked that there wouldn't be many pumps in my size. Turned out there were... bought by men.

Come On!Who's idea was this? Stiletto racing!! Please can you try to be more creative in your imagination?

Part 2 of 2: Unfortunately it seems that laughing at oneself and having fun in the process of fundraising funds may not be fit for the maltese. What a shame. Especially since most men have definitely dressed up as women for carnival, at some point in their life! So it seems none would complain about the "health" concerns during a carnival dress-up ... but do so for charity?

Dressing up as a woman doesn't carry any health risks as far as I'm aware but running round in stilletto heels does especially if you're a man!

Totally Agree Maria! It's Maltese mentality unfortunately.

Part 1 of 2: The Stiletto Run Marathon has been used internationally over several years to raise funds for various philantropies. The most renouned one is the "Walk in her shoes" held in the US to raise awareness of battered women and funds for shelters. Then there is the celebrity stiletto run that raises funds for breast cancer research. Kudos to the organisers for introducing it to malta.

Come on people, where's the fun in life if you're afraid to run in high heels?? I didn't know about it and I wasn't there, but I wish I was, it sounds like a fun idea.

It was fun indeed! Maybe next year then, and hopefully some better promotion would help the turnout too

It was fun indeed!! ...am sure next year will be more successful! And for those who don't want to run, you can just walk. Am sure many of you have been invited to events & were standing for some hours with stilettos. Or maybe you need food when wearing stilettos? Well if this is the case, next year the organisers can maybe have some appetizers along the 700mtrs :-) Am sure food attracts many maltese

how very surprising to hear of all the healthy concious population's remarks about this race! I bet the majority of you were sipping on the tenth mug of coffee, with a lit cigarette in the ashtray next to you after a greasy meal while reading and leaving your negative comments about this race. how's that for healthy i wonder? well, i'd like to think that i'm wrong but i highly doubt it

I think the health concious are the ones who avoided this race, it does not exactly scream intelligent to run 700metres in 7.5cm heels,

For an health insurance to promote running on stiletto is quite crude especially since doctors do not even suggest wearing them at all.

Whose idea was this of running or walking on high heels shoes ???? Do they wanted a number of casualties ( broken feet) or something similar.
Vanessa Mifsud
Nov 20th 2012, 01:45
For goodness sake it was only 700m! Less than twice the length of the Marsa Sports ground. There was no competition, that's why its called Fun Run so one can even walk it at their own pace.

Maybe it's just as well. Somehow I feel that the emergency depatment at Mater Dei has been spared some extra work!

Forgetting the fact that walking on high heels is bad for the feet irrespective of gender, I think that more thinking could have prevented such a low turnout. Even if this was undoubtedly for a worthy cause, one cannot assume that 'anything goes'. But that's my 2c...

No thanks. A while ago I twisted my ankle badly (and I was wearing runner shoes) and spent 4 months nursing a very painful torn ligament.

Pupa a health insurance company is suppose to advertise healthy living not a race to damage your foot. What a nonsense. Ask a Podologist if what these people did is good for their health.

It is observed that many ladies who participated in the fun run do not know what stiletto shoes are since there were some of them wearing runner shoes.

I've heard some potty ideas for raising money in the past, but this one takes the biscuit!
Apart from a few, maybe, most Maltese men do not wear high heels, so were untrained and hopefully retain the ankles intact.
I know Health and Safety can be overdone, but common sense should have knocked this idea on the head before it started.

While possibly being a potentially ankle twisting experience,I have seen ladies running with high heels.. running to get a bus! The organiser must have been disappointed BUT she had the gall to organise this and all for a very worthy cause!Every event is being organised to raise more funds for the CCF..and every little helps! It was nice that PBS sent their cameramen and top presenter Reno Bugeja!

We all know that the Maltese have a wierd sence of humour if ANY, but this is contradicitng their health and safety policy, now i ask you running with high Stiletto heels is surely asking for broken limbs, so i guess the is one way for BUPA to advertise for more business, Silly Silly Silly, rather them then me. have a safe? weekend.

Iris my girl wierd you say, they are stange people, until,it comes to money they are not so wierd or stange after all, who ever suggested running wearing stillettos should have his head examined or better still hold him or her responisble for any accidents caused and make them pay charity or no charity. A utterly daft idea at least this is one way of eating hospital grab specially over xmas.

Run in shoes that provide no support and cushioning or, even worse, high heels, and the risk of injuries sky rockets. The turnout wasn't disappointing at all. I'm sure there are smarter ways to raise funds for L-Istrina.

Although i believe the idea was stupid... i do not think that it is healthy to encourage running with stilettos. Thank God no one broke a leg!
On a positive note however more advertising should have been in order. I was not aware that such a run was to take place. I am an annual follower and contributor to L-istrina Fund, so i would have surely joined in someway or another!
