A Macedonian couple who stole an iPhone from a shop were yesterday given suspended jail terms and are expected to be deported today.
Miroslav Karafiloski, 29, and Kristina Kusleska, 25, who both lived in Sliema, admitted, through an interpreter, to taking the phone last Friday from the Wella shop in Gżira.
Police Inspector Jason Sultana said the couple were caught on CCTV.
Magistrate Neville Camilleri handed down a one-year jail term suspended for two years after noting their clean police records and the fact that they cooperated.
They will be deported after it was noticed that they had expired visas.

Think of all the jobs that will be created if the outhorities woke up and started sending back all the people who are living in Malta illegally and working . The maltese citizen should always come first .

About time the maltese courts start taken actions against these people, and deport them instead of putting them on probation,if they commit the crime, then off the go

Does "...they have a clean police record..." mean in Malta or even in their past domiciles?
We often read about "clean police record" but if they have only been here a few months and not been caught and convicted of crime locally, then they will all be arraigned with a clean record, even if they are carreer criminals.
Their global record should be the one that matters in court.

Stealing an iPhone? Really? Sure, go steal a device which is renowned as being trackable all over the world as long as it's switched on. I hope Apple finds a way to make it trackable even when off. Usually their owners (myself included) never power down their phones, save the occasional restart or battery cycle; most just flip the silent switch.

There are too many foreign wolves amongst us! Are the Police regularly checking on visitors's visit conditions or do they just not care about doing this? The buck for this dangerous situation stops at the P.M.'s office and he should explain what's going on....instead of toying on Facebook intent only to look business like so as to get re-elected.....
