Toyota is recalling 2.7 million vehicles worldwide for a steering defect and another 630,000 for a faulty water pump.

Michael Debono Ltd, Malta’s official Toyota centre, said the precise number of cars affected locally is still not known. It still has to receive a general list of all vehicles, identified by chassis number, before it will be able to contact the owners.

All modifications will be carried out free of charge.

The cars affected locally are the Prius, produced between June 2003 and 2009, the Corolla, produced between July 2001 and March 2004, and the Avensis, manufactured between August 2002 and October 2008.

In Europe, 142,000 Prius vehicles are involved, 26,600 Corolla cars and 327,000 Avensis models.

Japan’s top car marker said that no accidents had been reported related to the recent problems.

Only last month, Toyota recalled 7.4 million cars worldwide because of a fire risk posed by electric window switches. That recall involved 2,616 “potentially affected” vehicles purchased locally and imported from the UK.
