The Malta Union of Teachers shares the University Ombudman’s misgivings about the transparency and accountability of University recruitment.

The academic staff recruitment process was criticised by University ombudsman Charles Farrugia in the Ombudsman’s 2011 annual report.

This said while the process “may be fair, untainted and non-discriminatory”, it was “neither transparent nor accountable.”

The University said selection board members were given clear interview guidelines.

The MUT said it had told the rector its concerns and had tabled submissions with the ombudsman. The union noted candidate marks were not recorded in writing; they were not ordered according to suitability; and no objective proof showed the weighting of the set criteria was applied uniformly.
