Former Health Commissioner John Dalli and businessman Silvio Zammit have been questioned at length at the police headquarters.

Mr Dalli was called for questioning at headquarters yesterday and was there up till this evening

Mr Zammit was also at headquarters overnight and he was seen being driven out early this evening.

Mr Dalli left some time later.

They are believed to have been questioned as part of local investigations which stemmed from a report by OLAF, the EU anti-fraud office.

OLAF had claimed that Mr Zammit sought a bribe from a Swedish tobacco company to influence change to the EU tobacco directive, and there was clear circumstantial evidence that Mr Dalli was aware of these activities.

Mr Dalli had always denied the claims.

Mr Dalli resigned from the European Commission on October 16.  He has since insisted that he was not given the opportunity to react to the findings of the investigation before it was concluded.

The police questioning involved the most senior police officers including Commissioner John Rizzo.

Very often those "helping the police" are detained for two working days during most of which time no actual interrogation would be taking place.

I don't think this is a run of the mill case which would explain the lengthy period.

Obviously, what would be needed, in such a case, is a press conference by the Attorney General and Police COmmissioner to explain what they have been doing so far, since the papers came from OLAF at least a couple of weeks back...

@DAAgius.

It is not in the interest of justice for the AG or the Commissioner of Police to make premature statements when the police investigations are incomplete. Satisfying public curiosity could seriously interfere with the collection of useful evidence. That applies in all cases, whether "run of the mill" or not.

OLAF admits that its evidence is non-probative and circumstantial.

I fail to see any connection between Barroso and Kessler and the findings of the OLAV report.

Albert..the report to be compiled by end-November doesn't have anything to do with OLAV investigation report. It will be a report on the way the investigation report was handled after completion...it will be just a report on procedure and will have nothing to do with the investigation itself.
