In the next few months Transport Malta will be implementing an “intelligent traffic management” project to control traffic systems on arterial roads.

Transport and Communications Minister Austin Gatt said in Parliament on Monday that the project would consist of a framework of closed-circuit cameras and variable message signs for continuous monitoring of traffic flows.

The variable message signs, along with real-time spots on broadcasting media, would inform drivers of prevailing traffic conditions and allow them to choose alternative routes.

There would also be a system of optimisation of traffic-light timing for greater efficiency at junctions.

Dr Gatt was answering a question by Nationalist MP Ċensu Galea.
