Francis Jeffers has had a dig at his former club Floriana and Maltese football in general just a few weeks after his sudden departure from the Greens, branding the club and the local league as “ the worst I’ve been involved with”.

Last month, Jeffers, 32, signed a short-term deal with Floriana before the Greens’ first-round derby clash with Valletta. However, his spell at Floriana came to an abrupt end as he walked out of the club after only two games.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker yesterday wrote on his twitter account @OfficialJeffers that he regretted not accepting an offer to appear in English TV reality show I’m a Celebrity in order to join Floriana.

“Maybe I should of accepted that place in #imacelebrity because I have now left malta,” Jeffers tweeted. “That was the worst league/club I’ve been involved with.”

Floriana CEO Stephen Speed expressed his disappointment at Jeffers’s comment.

“Obviously it is very disa-ppointing to see that kind of comment from Francis Jeffers,” Speed told The Times.

“Unfortunately he couldn’t adapt to the team’s style of play and to the Maltese lifestyle. When he came over, we tried to help him as much as we could but he couldn’t settle and being away from his family also played a part in his decision to quit our club.

“But I must stress that he has left on amicable terms.”

Speed said that Floriana, third from bottom in the Premier League, are now planning to strengthen their squad in January.

“We are working hard to try and bolster the squad during the January transfer window,” Speed said.

“Our main focus is to increase the pool of Maltese players and give our technical staff better selection options. We are also looking at a number of high-profile overseas players but things are still at a premature stage.”
