An explosion levelled a home in Indianapolis and set four others ablaze today, causing several injuries.

Captain Rita Burris of the Indiana Fire Department said firefighters were still working to put out the flames after the explosion, which happened at around 11pm Saturday, local time.

She said there were multiple injuries but details remained sketchy and there were no fatalities reported.

She said the fire occurred in a south Indianapolis residential area and there was no immediate report on the cause, but authorities would be checking if gas was involved in the explosion, heard for miles around.

Capt Burris said firefighters would search the area once the fires were under control.
