More often than not, experience shows that in Malta, safety measures are implemented only after an accident happens. A recent example is the tragic death of Fr René Cilia early in the morning of Sunday, November 4, at Tal-Barrani Road, limits of Żejtun. This was followed by another crash the next day when a 36-year-old woman was injured practically in the same spot.

According to reports, people have been asking for crash barriers to be installed on this road, which is one of the most dangerous in Malta, for many years. This is corroborated by Transport Malta data for 2007- 2009. So, the question follows: what is Transport Malta waiting for to avoid such terrible accidents? Hopefully, it is not waiting for the number to soar and then act.

I dare say shame on whoever is ignoring certain pleas.
