The classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, of a princess who is poisoned by her evil fairy godmother, has been transformed into a contemporary dance by the Naupaca Dance Factory, a local troupe.

Called The Death of Snow White: A Tragedy in Seven Days, the performance will take place on December 1 at Aurora Opera House, Victoria, and on December 7 and 9 at the Mediterra-nean Conference Centre in Valletta.

The show reaffirms the fairy tale as one of wonder but also reveals the darker vision of the human condition repressed within.

The scenario is one in which time becomes a controllable object. Plot takes precedence over story, as the events of the tale remain faithful to the original yet unfold in a way that is not chronological.

Ultimately, what The Death of Snow White explores is the act of telling a story rather than story itself. It has no setting; it is set in a timeless space.

The choreographic and dramatic material explores a sense of tension between the mythic and the sacred, between the secular and the sublime, and manifests this tension through both a clash and a fusion between western and eastern aesthetics and modes of representation.
