Kerċem Ajax overcame SK Victoria Wanderers 1-0 to maintain their unbeaten start to the champion-ship and join Nadur Youngsters at the top of the standings.

Sabri Rais scored the winner for Kerċem who have a game in hand on both Nadur and nearest pursuers Xagħra United.

Both Kerċem and the Wanderers created a few scoring opportunities during the match but neither capitalised and the points could have gone either way.

However, in the end, it was the Ajax who were rewarded for their persistence thanks to Rais who struck the winner four minutes from time.

The highlight last weekend was the clash between rivals Xagħra and Nadur. As expected, the significance of the occasion influenced both teams as they adopted a cautious approach.

The two defences never yielded an inch and emerged unscathed when they fell under the pressure.

Xagħra had their best scoring chances through a John Camilleri effort seconds from half-time and a Kengo Takashima shot just before the final whistle.

Nadur were unlucky on two occasions when attempts by Charles Hili (17) and Sandro Muller (86) were stopped by the Blues’ woodwork.

In another match from the top flight, Xewkija Tigers beat Victoria Hotspurs 1-0 to move to a safe mid-table position.

Victoria, who had Jonathan Onyoha and Joseph Mercieca making their debuts, saw more of the ball in the opening stages but were rather erratic in their finishing.

The Tigers gained in confidence as the minutes ticked away and dictated matters for most of the second half. Their efforts were rewarded 15 minutes from time when Dene Shields found the net with a fine overhead kick.

Victoria Hotspurs lost their plot and were reduced to 10 men five minutes from time when James Farrugia was sent off for a foul on Elton Vella.

Division Two

Munxar Falcons edged Qala Saints 1-0 last weekend to stay second in the table.

The Falcons scored the decisive goal on 13 minutes through Clayton Hili.

Qala tried to react but their hopes were dashed before half-time when they had two players – John Rapa and Denis Abela – sent off for two bookings.

Munxar opted to administer their lead but they also had a player sent off, Donald Borg, five minutes from time.

Meanwhile, St Lawrence Spurs boosted their play-off chances with a 4-1 win over Għarb Rangers.

The Spurs opened the scoring through Fabian Cini but Christian Azzopardi levelled matters right on the hour.

A Mario Gauci penalty seven minutes from time put the Spurs back in front and they made sure of victory with two more goals through Cini (89) and Mario Portelli (90).
