Police arrest Sliema mugger
A 28-year-old man from Cottonera but resident in Naxxar has been arrested in connection with the mugging of a woman in Sliema on Tuesday, the police said.
The man was arrested earlier this afternoon after a person watched a YouTube video, uploaded on timesofmalta.com, showing CCTV footage of a man mugging the woman. He recognised the robber and called the police.
The mugging took place at 3.46pm on Tuesday in Sir Luigi Camilleri Street. The robber ran off with a gold necklace with a diamond cross and left the 67-year-old woman from Sliema lying on the ground.
The arrested person has a police record and was arraigned on other crimes some years ago.

We need plain clothes policemen to police our streets in the evenings and afternoons
Paul Preston
Nov 9th 2012, 10:29
Good idea but how many Policemen would you need and which streets would you target ? .. Like the UK Street/Road Surveillance Camera's long term may perhaps be a better idea .. But then I suppose that potential idea is only for the main Streets/Roads anyway you obviously couldn't cover everywhere sadly !

it would of been fitting if a movie clip of the arrest was posted on UTUBE aswell, the very least it might prove to be a deterrent to other criminals!!!

So what, for this time public did there part, you should know that the Police without the public help can do near to nothing, we have to help them and it is our duty to do so. After all it is for our interest.

If the person involved was arraigned on other crimes and therefore known to the police, why did it have to be the public to recognize him?
Mario Tabone
Nov 9th 2012, 08:02
I see the experts are at it again !!!!!!!!
'Known to the Police' does not mean that every policeman or woman knows this person !!! It simply means that he has a police record.
Mr Mike Farrugia
Nov 9th 2012, 07:32
"He recognised the robber and called the police."
Since this guy was well known to the police, why did it have to be a citizen to inform the police about him? Don't the police watch youtube, Facebook or the Times??
This is similar to various other illegal activities going on. Everyone turns a blind eye until a formal complaint is filed.

You see how simple it is to clean our streets, all it took is a phone call, hope that now the courts do what should be done in this circumstances, lock him up and throw the key down the drain.

Did the police recover the golden necklace with a diamond cross or he already sold it?
If so, did they return it to the victim?
I have my doubts.

Why such negativity towards our local enforcement, some people just enjoy putting bad light on them.
Mr Pace Before making assumptions to satisfy your negativity, do some research or read more articles and you'll find out

u halluna ! Hadn't there been that CCTV , the robber would surely have gone scotch free . Many elderly persons here in Sliema are NOW aware of the risk to venture outsde ALONE at any time of the day . Just a few months ago an eldery lady lost her life in Hospital after a similar assult . There are cases where the thief/s have not been identified .
Where are the Police patrols ?

In California the people circulated a proposition called the "3 strikes law". Enough people signed it so it was put to the vote on election day and it was passed. Now if you are a repeat felon, with the third conviction you automatically go to jail for a period of no less than 25 years. Crime has since dropped.

@Mr Kevin Zammit(Today, 20:36). You have omitted 'the opium of the people'. The most dangerous
because it presents a holier-than-thou front and is generally not seen as an addiction. It's insidious, bigoted and divides people and worse. Education for sound morality/rock-solid ethics works better because it's upfront. Just my opinion, of course. It's a free world but not for sinners.

A classic case of synergy. A CCTV owner, the press ( The Times), a member of the public identifying the presumed mugger, and the Police who arrested the man. Now all that remains are the Courts. Lets see if the magistrate decides to call the case earlier than published, or lets the culprit off with a suspended sentence. That women could have been yours or my mother and the guy sent to jail.

let me think ... he needed the money for drugs .... is it not about time that we realize some if not most of these problems can be better solved by treating drug addicts instead of jailing them.
Dont get me wrong I am ambivalent about legalise drugs but ... alcohol, prostitution, gambling, smoking ... all semi legal and legal and just as addictive for many ... these vices we try to cure.
Roger Chenery
Nov 9th 2012, 09:19
I agree that everything should be done to help and treat drug addicts but there are too many cases where the courts appear to be too lenient because the crime was caused by such addiction. If the offered help is not effective and the drug addict continually resorts to violent crime as in this case to feed the addiction then a strong sentence is needed. Law abiding citizens must be protected.

From here I appeal to the police to make sure that no mistakes are made in this man's eventual prosecution. Please ensure that the time and date of the crime are properly noted. Also, make sure he has a lawyer during his questioning. Then, if found guilty, we all hope that the courts will come down on him in full force, and send him to prison for some years to contemplate his future.
