Two Floriana Labour councillors yesterday launched a petition urging the Government to consult residents about plans to privat-ise car parks.

The privatisation of public car parks had been put on hold following a public outcry and a motion presented in Parliament by the Opposition to halt the process.

Councillors Davina Sammut and Vincent Borg are “absolutely against the privatisation of car parks in Floriana”.

Residents were already finding it difficult to find parking spaces because Valletta commuters looked for “free parking” in Floriana, and the privatisation of car parks would make the problem worse, they added.

Labour spokesman Stefan Buontempo, who was speaking at a press conference held in Floriana with the two local councillors, insisted the Government should consult not only the parkers but the residents, local councils, community entities and constituted bodies about the issue.
