Simon Busuttil’s nomination for the Nationalist Party deputy leader contest is being endorsed by 26 party members, including former European Commissioner Joe Borg, MP Jean Pierre Farrugia and former Parliamentary Secretary Richard Muscat.

Other potential candidates have not yet announced their intentions

Other signatories of the Nationalist MEP’s candidature are Health Minister Joe Cassar (the only Cabinet member who features), party Whip David Agius and the president of the PN’s administrative committee, Karol Aquilina.

Young MPs Karl Gouder and Joseph Falzon also endorsed Dr Busuttil, together with seven new PN candidates.

Other potential candidates such as Environment and Culture Minister Mario de Marco, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, Justice Minister Chris Said and MP Beppe Fenech Adami have not yet announced their intentions.

Tonio Borg resigned the post of PN deputy leader after Dr Gonzi nominated him to replace John Dalli in the role of Malta’s European Commissioner.

Mr Dalli resigned in the light of an investigation by the EU’s anti-fraud agency, OLAF, though he has denied all the allegations made against him.
