Here we go again on the fact that we have the George Cross on our national flag.

First we have a Maltese-Australian, Paul Calleja, talking about the Maltese being “taken in” by the British ploy to avert a Maltese surrender. He obviously did not know that the Maltese were bravely fighting to avoid falling under the dictatorship of Hitler and Mussolini. We veterans still around know what we were fighting for and our children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren are proud of what we did for our country.

It is Mr Calleja from Perth who does not seem to know that his own country, Australia, is not regarded as a lackey of the UK just because they have the Union Jack on their flag. Although I know many Australians want a republic, the great majority still remember the brave Australians (and New Zealanders) who defended their country against the Japanese menace. I advise Mr Calleja to look back at Australia’s history as a colony and the success the Australians have made of their country just like Malta.

Similarly I say to Norman E. Grech (November 2) to get off his hobby horse for the removal of the George Cross from our flag. We Maltese have no “servile genes”, as he insists. We survivors were not servile either during World War II or since. We fought alongside our allies to save our country from the Nazis and the Fascists. We are proud to have the George Cross on our national flag. May it remain long after we veterans have gone.
