Alternattiva Demokratika’s statements regarding the nomination of Tonio Borg as Malta’s new EU commissioner came as no surprise.

However, they do carry with them very serious implications.

This party, which for years has preached that discrimination of any kind is despicable, is now saying that they are ready to discriminate on the grounds of one’s religious beliefs.

If AD wishes to be credible it must immediately dissociate itself from these statements and its implications and convince the European Greens that their stance amounts to discrimination.

If the EU Greens do not change their discriminatory attitude, AD should sever their affiliation to them. Failure to do this will brand AD, together with their European partners, as a discriminatory body.

The same should be said of the European Socialist Party.

Can anyone tell me if local or European anti-discrimination law protect us against this type of discrimination?
