The third MTBA championships for senior players were held re-cently at the Eden SuperBowl.

The event for 50+ bowlers, played over one day, saw Josephine Borg claim a third title in a row, while the men’s competition was won by Benny Hili, the inaugural winner along with Borg in 2010.

Borg got off to a mediocre start in her six-game series to leave the women’s event wide open.

Game three was where Borg began to take charge, rolling a gross 212, backed up with a 193 to put some daylight between herself and the rest of the field with two games remaining.

Borg finished off with a 195 and 194 for a gross total of 1,123, enough to reward her with title number three in as many years.

Her nearest challenger was Mary Galea, down on 963 pins, with Josephine Bonello third on 943 and Maryanne Mula fourth on 843.

The men’s championship was a much closer run thing, with at least five bowlers easily in with a chance of bagging the honours.

Hili opened with a low 164 but then quickly found his scoring pace to bang in high consecutive games of 216, 203 and 235 and power into the lead.

The win was not going to be as easy as Hili may have thought, as he then dropped to a penultimate game of 164, with the likes of Division One regular players Paul Baldacchino and Roy Swift hot on his heels.

In fact, it was all still to play for as game six rolled off.

A 197 put Hili in a 1,179 total, enough for victory only a mere four pins ahead of Baldacchino and Swift two pins further back in third place. Leli Baldacchino followed on 1,168 to round up a very tight top four.
